Why is Battle Creek called “Battle Creek”?
The fight that gave the city its name really wasn’t much of a battle. Two members of a surveying party fought with two Indians on the bank of a creek in 1825. The surveyors indicated on the map where the “battle by the creek” had taken place. Later the name was shortened to Battle Creek. The community was established in 1831and chartered as a city in 1859.
