Del Shannon Monument

This monument was errected on the former site of the Hi-Lo Club. It was at the Hi-Lo Club where Del Shannon, (born Charles Westover in Coopersville, MI), "rocked" when the Charlie Johnson Band played "Runaway" the first time. Runaway sold over six million copies. The stone base was built by a local stone mason. The granite replica of the Big Top 45 RPM record is exact to the original and includes all of the type. It is the only official state historical site that honors a Rock n Roll singer and a song.

Riverside Cemetery

Listed in the State Register of Historic Sites, the first burial in this cemetery occurred in 1837, the year Michigan became a state. The cemetery, which reflects Albions ethnically diverse population, has areas known as "The Russian Section," "German Hill", and a section for African American World War I veterans. A private Catholic cemetery contains the remains of people from Italy, Lithuania and Poland. Albions Riverside Cemetery is the final resting place of numerous people of state and national significance including State Senator Warren G. Hooper who was shot to death gangland style three days before he was to testify before a grand jury investigating alleged corruption in the Michigan legislature. One of the most famous unsolved murder mysteries in Michigan, the Hooper case was a significant event in Michigan politics in the late 1940s.
