How to support local restaurants

Small businesses have thin profit margins and there’s been a lot of talk about the impact COVID-19 is going to have on the service industry.

But you can help! Here are some tips for supporting locally owned restaurants and some of the services they’re offering now.

  1. Take time to post positive reviews of your favorite local restaurants. Google, Facebook, Yelp – people use these when deciding about a new restaurant. And when it’s okay to travel again, good reviews can drive future business.
  2. Buy a gift card. It could help a business get through a lean time and you’ll get to use it eventually. Clara’s on the River will mail you a gift card if you want to order one over the phone. Cafe Rica offers gift cards through their website.
  3. Ever considered buying that T-shirt or mug with your favorite brewery on it? Now is the time to get one. Territorial Brewing Company just got new hats and shirts with their logo.

There seems to be little risk of getting contaminated from food, but be especially conscious of the people delivering your food, who are more at risk of exposure. It’s encouraged to pay over the phone or online, to decrease contact. And remember to tip!

There are three options for ordering from restaurants. Curbside: Like using the drive-thru for places that don’t have a little window. Delivery: Some restaurants are now using servers to drive the food to you or there’s a third-party service. Take-out: Order ahead, but you have to go inside to pick up your food.

We gathered service information on some locally owned restaurants — most chain restaurants have drive-thru service and takeout. Check the restaurant Facebook for the latest updates.
