There’s something about a light show that puts people in the holiday spirit. The Calhoun County Fairgrounds in Marshall has created a mile-long display of decorations that are sure to brighten your winter night.

When is it?

They’ll be open 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays Dec. 5-Dec. 29. That includes Christmas Eve, if you’re looking for a way to entertain kids who are too excited about Santa.

Do I drive or walk?

The light display is drive-through only. For special events, volunteers will direct you to a different entrance where you can park near Floral Hall.

How long does it take?

Plan for about 15-20 minutes. The route is more than a mile long!

Can I meet Santa?

It wouldn’t be merry without Santa. Meet the jolly old elf on Santa Saturdays. He’ll be at Floral Hall from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 7, 14 and 21.

Anything else happening at the fairgrounds?

The Eggnog Jog is on Dec. 4 (with a special appearance by Santa).

A live nativity will be added to the Merry Mile Dec. 13 & 14.

Can I take a van or bus through?

Yes! It does cost a little more. Cars are $10 and a van or bus is $20.

How far away is downtown Marshall?

It’ll take you three minutes to drive from downtown Marshall to the fairgrounds.

Where should I eat dinner?

Downtown Marshall has a lot of good things to eat. For a classic, try Schuler’s Restaurant & Pub. They’ll have the fire going and the special Schuler’s cheese spread is great for holiday parties.

Copper Athletic Club is cozy and Grand River Brewery has lots of comfort food. If you can’t say no to tacos, try El Tajin

Where can I get hot chocolate?

You can’t tell from the name, but True North Ice Cream in Marshall has great hot chocolate. Check out the hot chocolate bar and mini doughnuts, open from 2 to 9 p.m.

If you want to stay in the car, Biggby has a drive-thru window and is open until 8 p.m.
