Here in Calhoun County, we have a knack for two things— delicious food and the great outdoors.

There’s an abundance of unique patio dining options to gather and enjoy the fresh air and tasty bites.

Some are in the downtown Social District, allowing visitors to stroll around the river area with food and drinks for an even more maximized experience outdoors.

Here are some of our favorite spots to dine al fresco:

New Holland Brew Pub

New to Battle Creek in 2023, New Holland brings seasonal beers, distilled spirits, and a hearty pub menu to downtown. They recently opened their beer garden, equipped with a permanent cover, overhead heaters and long picnic-style tables for year-round outdoor dining. It also has an outdoor bar, fire pits, flatscreen TVs, yard games and a stage for entertainment. Grab a friend and a stein and head down to the garden.

Clara’s on the River

Situated on the Kalamazoo River, Clara’s was once an old train station. Get the European Experience on their garden patio, decorated with foliage, large umbrellas, and twinkling string lights. It’s the perfect ambiance for a relaxing night near the riverwalk, complete with live entertainment. Locals highly recommend their mixed drinks and Sunday Brunch.

Griffin Grill & Pub

Grab your furry friend and head to Downtown Battle Creek to the Paw-tio for a cold Guinness and lively atmosphere. Griffin offers traditional Irish and English cuisine and brews on their spacious patio, as well as live music throughout the weeknights. Be sure to check out the Pub Dog menu— where your mate can order a pup cup or Bark-cuterie board.

Dark Horse Brewing Company

This Marshall microbrewery — known for its experimental brews and large handcrafted-mug collection — offers a football-field-sized beer garden equipped with a fire pit and outdoor bar. Fans should look up brewery tours and a general store. Be sure to check out their website to stay updated on live music and events

Moonraker Restaurant & Lounge

How many places do you know of with two patios? Not only does Moonraker have an outdoor patio with weekly live music and radiant heaters, but they also have a recently renovated screened patio with a view of Harper Creek. Enjoy seasonal outdoor dining while still being protected from the elements. Located about three miles from Binder Park Zoo, it’s the perfect spot to fuel up or wind down during your activities. They feature a unique selection of adult beverages such as a rum punch bucket, mimosa flights, and on Sunday: a truly EPIC Bloody Mary.
