Fall is the best time of year for a sweet-tooth. We’re not just talking about Halloween, but all of the traditional treats that come with the season. Here are some of the best in Calhoun County:
Doughnuts at Station 66
Cider and a pumpkin doughnut go together perfectly. Get your fix at Station 66, where fall is celebrated not only with a variety of sugary doughnuts, but also pumpkins, fall decorations and hayrides on the weekends in October.
Station 66 isn’t far from Binder Park Zoo, which is also open through October. Feed the giraffes and see the lions in the Wild Africa exhibit, or climb like a monkey and soar like a bird on the three-story ropes course.
Caramel apples at Horrocks & Company
Horrocks makes its own caramel apples and popcorn. They’re great treats for a bonfire night.
Horrocks also has live music on the weekends in the tavern, where you can get a beer or wine and shop.
Pumpkin cookies at Louie’s Bakery
Holiday sugar cookies are a tradition at Louie’s in Marshall. For Halloween, they make orange pumpkins. And while it’s technically a year-round doughnut, the nut roll is full of fall flavor with cinnamon and gooey frosting.
Once the fall leaves turn color, the country roads around Marshall are the best for a fall drive. The roads might lead you to places like Cornwell’s Turkeyille, where it’s Thanksgiving all the time, or Bosserd’s Family Farm.
Baked goods at Foundry Bakehouse and Deli
Foundry has a variety of baked goods that pair well with crisp air and the start of school. Maple doughnuts are a favorite or try the cranberry orange oatmeal cookie for a perfectly spiced, fruity cookie.
Baked goods go together with books, and Albion has two downtown bookstores: the cozy Stirling Books and The Midnight Chapter, a romance bookstore.
